That one looks "Real Nice" for just an MS-62!

A very clean 62, based on these pictures.

I'd need a little better image to be sure, but I'd start with VAM-38.

Thanks guys. I will get a better pic or two to help clarify the VAM markings. Great link by the way 7TF. Much needed and very helpful. It might be a day or two to go through all the VAMS in order to correctly identify my coin. David

VAM 32 or 44a is what I narrowed it down to so far. Pics to follow soon...

Make sure and look the coin over really good with a jewelers loop. The home page on the VAMworld site will explain how to attribute all of your Morgan and Peace dollars. VAM 32 has a die gouge in the tail feathers as shown on the page. http://www.vamworld.com/1878-P+VAM-32 but it can be confused with VAM 34 http://www.vamworld.com/1878-P+VAM-34 or VAM 45 but VAM 45 does not have strong 7/8 TF so I doubt that is what you have. I would check VAM 34 though just to be sure. You said it could be VAM 44a but it is a lot different than 32 because it has a lot of fairly strong clashing which I don't see in your pictures. 44a also has some roughness around the bow, it also does not have any gouges in the tail feathers.

Well it can't be a VAM-44a or a VAM-44 as that VAM is a 7/8 weak and in that grade is way over 10K. If it was a V-44 in that grade I would of lost posting privileges for some time as a bad word or two would f cm out of my fingers by mistake.

No prob, Russ - our Bad Word Filter would have zipped your lips for you. Of course, we'd dearly like large-enough images to have a go at attributing this one ourselves, CxG. We're demanding that way - we don't want you to have all the fun.

It's hard to tell from your photos but it may be a 39A.

I'm left with the impression of 39A by that reverse myself, but the obverse needs to be on board for it as well. Looks like all 39's are clashed on the obverse, so that needs to be there, as does the cap gouge and broken 4th star. Just can't tell from the small obverse images.

Agreed. I'm putting the pieces of the obverse puzzle together using both obverse pictures. The first suggests crumbling of the 4th right star. The second shows the wing clash line just south of the neck V and slightly north of the neck wrinkle. The rest of the pups I'm using my imagination.
