For an example of the bill, see my Avatar. I assume the figure is Liberty but cannot tell what the object is that's being held high in the hand of the raised left arm of the figure. Does anyone know what that is, or what it symbolizes?

I believe that is the reverse of the 1901 10$ Bison note. The theme is Columbia walking between two pillars presenting America's fruits of labor to the rest of the world. I believe she is holding wheat stalks or grain of some type.

Somebody else may know more or have a different interpretive.
Rest in Peace

Thank you for the Welcome! I also appreciate the quick reply to my question. Cool Avatar, huh? But there is a "reason" for my question that goes beyond sheer curiosity.. so any other ideas would also be appreciated.

Thanks barryg for confirming that what she's holding is a sheaf of wheat.

Whenever you see two pillars, those are the ends of Europe and Africa - the known ("old") world. They are seen also on the Spanish Milled Dollar, and it's where the dollar sign comes from - a sash (saying PLUS ULTRA, And more/beyond, think of Buzz Lightyear) draped around the Pillars of Hercules as seen also on the Spanish coat of arms.

Your avatar is an image of Lady Liberty, featured on the Series of 1901 $10 note, known by collectors as the "Bison Note". Upon close examination of the example in my inventory, I can see that Liberty is holding merely a stalk of wheat, nothing symbolic of anything but agriculture, or so I believe. Beside her on both sides are pillars that express, I believe, Europe and Asia.
