My girlfriend got this coin for me for christmas It is an ICG slabbed 1921 Peace at AU55. The holder is very scuffed on the obverse and pretty clear on the reverse. The more I look at this coin, the more I notice the luster it has. I wanted to post it here and see what you all thought? I would really like to stick to Morgans, but having this key date peace isn't hurting anything. I do however, think this may be worth getting crossgraded into a PCGS holder, and I wonder if it may even be eligible for an upgrade to 58? I consider this more of an investment than a piece I will keep. If anything, I may just send it back to ICG to get a cleaner holder to let it shine like it should. I'll post some pictures, there is a heavy mark on the neck and in front of the nose/mouth in the field on the obverse. There is also a little 3 mark area on the eagles right wing right above the thigh, smack dab in the middle of the reverse. All these marks and a little wear on the obverse has me thinking it wont go above AU, but maybe it will? And thanks for bearing with me on the scuffing on the holder, I tried some headlamp cleaner I have and it really didn't fill in or fix the scuffs and scratches on the holder. The Peace dollars are so hard to grade IMO, but I thought I would see if anyone here has any input or suggestions on if it would cross/upgrade or if it would even be worth sending it to PCGS. I would send it in with either the LCS in a bundle or at some point when I feel I want to send some coins in together. Let me know! You can see the line on the neck and two in front of the mouth/nose area in this and the next pic pretty good The three white dots in the middle of the reverse on the wing are the three little marks I was talking about...

Nice gift! The holder easily be cleaned with Slab-Renew or headlight lenses polish. The coin looks fully graded at 55. I doubt you're going the get a 58 anywhere, let alone at PCGS. The marks on the reverse wing look like contact marks from the reeding of another coin. I'd be happy with it in the ICG holder and not waste money on re-slabbing.

Not an upgradeable coin and certainly not by PCGS. An AU 1921 peace is not going to be substantially more valued in a different holder. It appears to be graded correctly and will considered as such no matter what holder it is in. Nice gift, was this a lucky shot by a great gf, or had you been heavy hints ?

Crack it out if the holder is no good! I don't think ICG is a fully reputable TPG, and if the slab is interfering with your enjoyment of the coin, I'd put it in a generic hard-plastic holder.

I'd say crack it out and submit to PCGS. I think you'd get atleast AU-50 on this one and that'll get you better money than a ICG AU-55.

Lovely gift! I second the opinions about cracking it out and possibly having it re-graded.

Gotta agree with the leave it alone crowd. VERY nice coin but not worth the resubmission fee's...imo. BTW, also agree with the great girlfriend sentiment.

I don't see the point in spending the money to send it to PCGS when he stated that he was going to keep it.

Would it be better off in a PCGS holder, absolutely. But, I would leave it alone or get it reslabbed. It was a gift from the girlfriend enjoy it for what it is. If you break up and want to reslabb it do it then, for now enjoy it for the thought put into the gift.

No reason to crack it out or submit to PCGS unless you are planning on selling.
And if you're planning on selling it I'm sure your GF would not be too happy with you about it.
If the time or situation comes some day when you need to sell it then reassess your options at that time.

I think we need a thread on how to clean coin slabs. Surely there is a way to buff out those scratches?

Quote: Surely there is a way to buff out those scratches? Different stuff works better on different slabs since they all use a little bit different material. Headlight polish usually works and I've had success with the NOVUS slab polish in the past. I've never tried on an ICG one though so I dont have a clue what works best for those. It can take a lot of buffing sometimes and multiple applications to get the job done. Dont be surprised if you only see minimal improvement after the first attempt.

For what it would cost you (at least $30) you would be 20%-25% on your way to buying another one in AU. I would stop worrying about taking care of that holder and take care of that girlfriend. Leave the coin alone and spend the money on her. She got you a 1921 Peace dollar for Christmas, are you kidding me?

Thanks for all the input everyone! My girlfriend knows I like Morgans, but my buddy who is a manager at a local pawn shop told her that this was a good deal and she got it for me. He was really fair on pricing. I agree on the taking care of her part, she is a wonderful person to me. But she says I am the best person to her too so... we help each other out and get through life together!. I don't think she would be offended if I got rid of this coin because she knows I like Morgans. But I am going to keep it for a while anyways, and enjoy having it to look at and show off. I did try headlight cleaner, I don't think it will really clean up the fuzzy area. I was a mechanic for a long time and used to clean people's lights for them if they wanted but this holder just isn't reacting very well. I really just think it deserves to be re-slabbed. And after reading some replies, there definitely is a split camp as far as I can see on this topic. I think I would try and crossgrade if anything, I didnt think that involves cracking. And BH1964, I agree that those look like Reed Marks from another coin! I think the grade is right, I just think a PCGS holder is more the investor way to go. I will update you all if I decide to go that way. Otherwise, it'll stay ICG. It's ony like 5$ and shipping to get it re-slabbed by them. Now I'm gonna see if a little more elbow gease and headlight cleaner will work... thanks for all the input everyone! Chime in if you havent already, I would be glad to hear your opinion :)

Theres no cracking out involved for that if it doesn't cross, but it is a lot cheaper to crack the coin out and submit it in another group than to submit that as a standalone crossover. The crossover method is really more for coins of significant value you wouldnt want to risk harming in the crackout or could lose a lot of money if it downgraded.
