FR sent me these afflicted double sesterces to see if I could do anything with them.

the first one is too far gone - the patina is shattered and the copper infected so the detail is all but gone. The reverse is VICTORIA AVG. I've just taken the water out and put it into wax, theres not much else to be done with this.

The other is very nice. If it didnt have BD it wouldve been worth a buttload. But anything you do to it damages it further - FRs packaging was like fort Knox, but it still seemed to have degraded a bit and everything I did just broke more off - the whole patina is undermined with BD, so there was no treatment which would result in a nice coin. I tried to wax it but that also broke off more patina, so I coated it in a polymer (acid free), gave it a couple of coats to protect it, and then waxed over that for a shine.

ID isn't known...its not LAETITIA, and I cant find any other legend for the Galley. Also, below the waves is what appears to be a palm branch, couldnt find reference of that either.

You did what you had to do. How else to save the coin from just crumbling apart?

I did my best to insure you didn't receive a package of 'crumbs' !

For whatever they are worth (about 5 cents) I am glad you got some small pleasure.

Merry Christmas and Ho Ho Ho

PS I am still "working" with a larger one and another 'reduced'. I don't expect much ...... They might show up on your doorstep someday.
You are like the "Island of Lost Toys"

Well, I've always wanted a double sestertius so I'm pretty pleased with how the one on the right turned out. The one on the left I'm not sure what to do with. Perhaps spread the goodwill and gift it to someone who doesn't have any roman coins. Perhaps put it on ebay with the free listing period - try and get FR's postage back! I've seen an example like this sell for nearly £20, so who knows.

And I dont mind being the island of lost toys...its got me 2 Postumus double sesterces, among other things! If theres one thing I dont mind, its giving a home to the broken and beaten coins.
