jmkendall Pillar of the Community United States 1590 Posts	Posted 01/01/2014 12:05 pm I'll weigh in on photography. I do sell a lot of copper on ebay. As Ssuperdave said, it is very very difficult to photograph copper correctly. I have photographed literally thousands of coins and am still learning. And I have different standards or tricks for different types of coins. For instance I will photograph on a slight angle to capture a lamination, because the details don't always show up in an overhead shot. As for Remaining red on a RB, that is by far the hardest part. I have some RB Cents that are just breathtaking in hand, but really....well...suck in a photograph. I commonly get remarks that some of my coins were better in hand than in the photograph; particularly Indians. It's a good thing we have a section on photography! Report this Post to the Staff
SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 01/01/2014 1:36 pm Worn copper is a slam dunk, but lustrous copper and Red examples are . Sufficient light to reveal details brightens the actual color too much; the coin will generally appear "redder" than it ought. For example: That one was an honest RB, yet under direct lighting it went all "sunglasses." A little diffusion is in order, possibly even (and I rarely advocate this) area lighting as opposed to direct. This was with a "direct diffusion" setup - diffusers attached to the direct lights themselves: That's pretty faithful to the actual color, but still a shade bright. If you, as a photographer, can consistently get the color of lustrous copper correct, you've arrived. Report this Post to the Staff
