Last night I was looking through my older dimes and took a closer look at my 1834 Large 4 variety dime. I had never looked closely at the coin before and this time several things caught my eye. I believe this is a contemporary counterfeit.

On the obverse, there is a large lump on the neck, the denticles are poorly formed, the hair is poorly defined, and there is some extra metal pointing at a star at the 3 o'clock position.

On the reverse, the field on the right side has a lot of lumps and extra metal, as do some letters. Some letters are poorly formed, and the denticles change size and shape.

The rim does have reeding and there is no evidence of a casting line.

Has anyone seen this particular counterfeit before?

For some reason, to me, it looks like it was hammered on the rim. But how would that explain it being raised on the obverse side? Very interesting.

That is too_cool, and certainly a contemporary counterfeit. They even went to the effort of kinda-simulating a JR-5.

Superdave, I assume that a JR-5 is a variety? What are the diagnostics of it? I would assume that perhaps that was the coin used as a pattern or reference to make this one.

Looking around on the internet, there seems to be a moderate amount of information about counterfeit halves from the 1830's, but I could not find anything on 1834 dimes. Are there many of these older contemporary counterfeits still around, or were most of them pulled and destroyed back when they were in circulation? I do know that there are a couple other CCF members that have collections of them as I recall one posting of a nearly complete 7070 with all counterfeits.

I suppose that I need to take a closer look at some of my other older coins and see if there are any more buried in the collection.

I guess that I can now say that I have started my own black cabinet

The odd configuration of the date and location of 10C. tend to hint at the JR-5 variety. In truth, I looked long and hard at this one before deciding it was a fake and not a real JR-5. The 1 and 4 don't quite make the grade.
