Looks genuine but there's no way I'd touch it. Price is already more than I'd pay for a polished/damaged piece.

Looks genuine? Wow -- I'm not very good at this!
The "dimples" or "indentations" in the coin -- especially on the reverse -- seemed (to me) to be like those "indentations" or "low spots" that others described to me as being signs of a fake. In other words, not scratches or gouges, but "low spots" or "dents" in the face of the coin. Also, the lettering -- in specific in the word "DOLLAR" -- looks wrong, to me -- the letters look too "wide," especially the LLAR. Too wide, not "sharp," kind of "smeared..."
Anyway, I obviously have alot to learn. Thanks for helping me along, guys.
Steve

Oh, and as for the price -- I didn't think it was that bad (though it will go higher). YES, it's not a piece that a true collector would like, but assuming this IS a genuine coin, and not a fake -- then there's no way I know of, for someone like me who simply would like to own a couple of genuine gold dollars in half-decent (i.e. not obviously damaged) condition, to find one ANY cheaper than that current $115 price. If ANY of you have a genuine specimen with any less damage than this coin, which you would sell me near that price, I am ALL EARS!! ;) Seriously...

Looks like the pics have a different background. Looks shady to me as well.

You can find xf details slabbed ones for a little over a 100 and should be able to find an au details under 200 thats graded by pcgs or ngc with some patience. If youre spending that kind of money to begin with, I would recommend saving up a little more and get a problem free one.

basebal21 -- absolutely I expect this coin go to up...probably won't sell for under $175, is my guess, from what I've seen on ebay. A slabbed XF for a little over a hundred? I'd jump on that immediately, if I saw it offered! Haven't seen one yet go for anywhere near that; right now, the cheapest "buy it now" dollar coin on ebay that is slabbed, is an ANACS-slabbed coin marked AU-50, bent -- at $220. So, no luck yet, but I'll keep looking... In the mean time, would I have any chance, if I would post some type of "wanted" ad somewhere here on the forum, to have someone consider selling me a slabbed XF-ish for 125-ish? Steve

You have to get your post count up first.

Raymo -- I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the info. I do recall reading something about how different things "become available," on the forum, as you pass different posting thresholds. I think 50 posts was one of the thresholds, and 100 may have been another, but I can't really recall the details. I'll go look for the details on that...
Thank you.

Raymo --
I just found the "rules," and saw this:
50 quality* posts and membership for 14 days are required to; buy items, respond to a trade, or post a want list.
A little more searching, and I found out that there is a "want list" section on the forum. I'll try making a post, and see what happens.
Thanks!
Steve

Steve, My personal opinion is to be careful with buying uncertified gold online. Also, it seems to me that the majority of sellers on ebay set their buy it now prices above market values. This one went for $135 + shipping at heritage auctions. It has some problems, but it is certified so you can buy with confidence. http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...=24536#PhotoGood luck with your search!

Thundercoin -- I've spoken with some folks here recently (after buying a possible fake on ebay) who have given me the very same advice. So, I am indeed wary. Part of the change in my strategy, thanks to the advice I've received here, has been to focus on slabbed coins when looking at ebay auctions. meanwhile, though, I'm trying to learn more about fakes vs. real coins, and how to identify "good" coins. As such, I posted this one in this thread more from an "educational" perspective, as I thought it looked "iffy." I've not been familiar with Heritage Auctions, so thanks for that link. I am not a member, so I couldn't see any "large" photos, but in the small photo that appears to be a coin I would have definitely considered for $135. I will look more into Heritage, because if that is at all representative of what can be found, that may be a good option for me. THANK you, for your advice and help. Steve

Quote: A slabbed XF for a little over a hundred? Several xf details ngc ones have sold in the 100-120 range. You just have to be patient. But you seem to be planning on spending close to 200 anyway and theres A LOT of AU 58s that are problem free that have sold for under 250 from NGC and PCGS. Just keep an eye out for what gets listed and some better options will pop up.
