Hey everybody! I was offered a 1875 S Twenty Cent Piece for $45 in G-VG condition. One problem- it's Counter-stamped. Should I buy this? What could I get for it if I resell it? Thanks

Without knowing the counter-stamp I would say no. You should ask for pictures.

If the counter-stamp has any historical value or any personal value to you, I would say go for it. If the counter-stamp is basically damage, I would think a G/VG 1875-S would not be worth that much.

I wouldn't be interested in anything with post mint damage or marks (even went with a mark free Trade dollar for my 7070).

Personally, I stay away from counter-stamped coins but I can appreciate the desire some folks have for them.

It would depend on the counter stamp and how detracting it was. I prefer counter stamps on Trade dollars due to the significance of the chop mark. I do not consider all counter stamps necessarily bad.

Technically a counter stamp is graffiti. However if the counterstamp is attractive or has some type of local, regional or national historically significance then that's a new ball game. Now the value is on the counterstamp stamp but the value is a with art --- beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
