I really am curious how easy/ hard it will be to put together a decent collection from pocket change only. Think I am gonna buy a cheap album this week and see how long it takes to fill it with nice AU to Unc coins. Already have about 15 states in Unc from pocket change. I'm betting it will be harder than one thinks.
I am gonna do it without regard to mint mark, just 1 decent coin per state and probably territorial ones too.

I pulled two really nice Hawaii quarters (both Philadelphia Mint) from a roll I got from a bank in Key West while I was on vacation in Florida before Christmas.

Actually this might not be that hard - although it won't be simple. I've seen a lot of high quality State Quarters lately. I think people that started saving them realized they were everywhere and have started dumping the collections they saved back into circulation.

I'm trying this set and am about half done. I am doing it solely from the pocket change I get here in Canada.

I visited the 'States in 2009.
The family I stayed with collected ALL of their loose change in a large cookie jar. I told them I was a coin collector, and they showed me the jar which had perhaps 5,000 coins of all denominations 1 cent to 25 cents.

I took all of the quarters from the accumulation, then the states quarters from that. I was able to assemble a COMPLETE basic set of 50 states quarters dated from 1999 through 2008, in a one off attempt.

Smile on face! Had about 2 hours of fun.
The cost of the U.S. Mint to manufacture and issue them? MY guess $7.50. My cost? $12.50, for face value.
Profit to the U.S. taxpayer: perhaps about $5.

If I had not exported them to Australia, there would have been no profit to the U.S. taxpayer.

Cheap memento of my visit to the U.S.!

Some Australian coin dealers in 2009 and 2010, were selling basic sets of States Quarters for AU$20-25.

This should be relatively easy to do. The best way is to go through some rolls of coins from the bank. I put mine together using 1-2 boxes (plus some I picked up in pocket change). They're all in the AU-MS range. Good luck on your set!!

It mainly depends upon where you live.
In places like New York City and Washington, DC, which get lots of visitors it will be a LOT easier to do than in a place like Littleton, Mass.

I have a routine where I go through my pocket change looking for those elusive ATB Quarters before I dump the coins in my 'piggy jar'. I look at the edges first; I nice shiny fully-reeded edge normally means the coin is new. The two nicest ones I pulled today were a 1999-P Connecticut and a 2000-D South Carolina. Both look, at worst, AU. No visible nicks to be seen.

There is no way these two coins should look this good if they've been circulated all these years. I second the motion that these were in collectors hands all these years and are now being dumped back into the circulation pool.

The territories will be a struggle, but the states shouldn't take too long. If you use cash exclusively, you could probably finish the entire set (in any grade at least) in a month.

Yeah, I've been seeing higher quality ones lately, too. I think its collectors who realize that they are only worth 25 cents PLUS so many were minted I think the Federal Reserve Banks still have them in the vaults. I suspect that is the reason the ATB's are so scarce. The Fed is circulating the older ones first and the ATB's are sitting in the vaults. I know the Fed accelerated release of the State Quarters, but are not doing it with ATB ones.

Got a book with P & D mint holes today. I'm just gonna filter through change and see how long it takes. Replace out existing ones with better ones as it get them. Should make pocket change fun for a awhile.

MS-grade State Quarters still make occasional appearances in my change, but getting all 50 in MS-grade from circulation would be a daunting task. AU, you could buy a box of circulated Quarters from a bank and have fairly good odds of finding all fifty designs in one shot.

I resemble this
Thirteen years of pocket change State Quarters saved in a pickle jar is about to head to Wells Fargo bank.
Any late-to-the-party roll hunters in this area looking to put sets together are gonna be very happy.

Update.
My dad said go through my accumulated pocket change as well. Between my pocket change and his, out of of 100 coins total I now have 86 of them. Lacking 1 philly mint and 13 Denver mint ones. It's pocket change accumulated over the past 10 years, so I couldn't resist the offer especially since it was free!
Most of them are UNC or AU coins and the set now has at least one for all 50 states.
It will be fun to see how soon I find the remaining 14.

I'm trying to do the same thing right now. I've completed Denver but Philly is much harder for me since I live in Oklahoma. I made a few trips to the car wash and just did five dollars in quarters each time to get mine.

Lol. I do the same at the car washes. I'm down to 1 Philly, 10 Denver. We get Denver coins here but the general mix is about 65 pct Philly, 35 pct Denver. I am betting the last one I have to find will be the Oklahoma D mint quarter.
