I am working on my 1935-1986 Canadian Dollar set. I am getting there but will buy at least three graded coins by time I am done. The main reasons are that I don't trust my eye enough to grading and I worry a little about forgeries. One of those coins will cost me a bunch being a 1948 Canadian Silver Dollar. I probably won't go higher than MS60 on these and will likely put them in my Gardmaster album with the rest of my Silver Dollars. I'll take pictures of the coins in their enclosures first. When I die and my family members decide they don't want to do coins they will at least know the original condition and can pay to reassess them if they wish. My collection is to enjoy in the way I will enjoy it most and that is not having it split up.

On the other hand, If I were buying for investment or with the idea of a quick turnaround or upgrade, I would keep the coin in its enclosure.

I don' t own any key dates major enough to be purchased slabbed, but I did put an XF 1921 Morgan in the 1895 slot in my Dansco. It's one of four that my dad gave me (two are Peace dollars, and the other Morgan is in the 1921-S slot.) It needed a home.

OP, being a week in, I think you are smart buying TPG coins or coins from a LCS you trust. You're also smart by looking for quality. It sounds like you will have a foundation for a very nice set. Many newbies make a mistake by buying poor quality just to fill a hole in an album. This is a mistake and they will likely lose money.

When I first started out I bought some TPG coins and broke them out of their slab so I could keep them in the same 2x2 album as my other coins. Now, I wish I had never done that because, as my collection grew, my better more expensive coins are the ones in the slab. I started a Dansco album this year just so a I could display my common date and duplicate coins. As others stated, there are no rules in this game and it's your hobby. Do as you wish. I would just caution to not be so quick to break them out unless you are absolutely sure you want to keep the coin for the long haul. TPG coins are easier to sell IMO vs. unslabbed ones, especially for some series like Trade dollars, Liberty Seated dollars, etc.
