I have two quarters a one is a 1970 and I see some kind of mark near the mint site but it is much smaller than the modern mind letters. Maybe a D or O. I also have a 1981 Quarter with a mark which I cant make out but doesn't look like a D or P...any help would be appreciated.

That question was a little too quick, let me say first,

Now the problem is without pictures it's impossible to tell, but for a start there was no mint mark for the 1970 quarters minted in Philadelphia, and San Francisco used an S mintmark but only produced mint sets that year. New Orleans used the O mint mark but stopped minting long before 1970. So it must be a D for Denver mint. After 40+ years of rolling around in peoples pockets you'd be showing signs of ware too, so with out seeing an image I'd have to say PMD or Post Mint Damage, it's just old.

The letters P and D are very close to each other in shape, I sometimes wonder if they are going to make another mint in a B city just to make us all go crazy, again probably PMD.

If you can't take pictures try getting a few rolls of quarters from the bank or the gas station, then find examples near to the dates and compare general condition and wear with the ones you have.

Good Luck and keep us posted.
