I have a gold plated 1973 Kennedy half dollar and I was wondering what the story was behind those. Is it a third party thing, or something the US mint is doing/why did they start doing this? If you know anything about this I would like to hear about it.

It is a third party thing. I have a gold plated 1972 Kennedy half dollar that I found back in the 1980's.

The U.S. mint does not plate any coins in gold. It might have been part of a set like this one at some time. http://www.danburymint.com/prod/17C...95-0011.aspx
Rest in Peace

....and a way of getting people to pay more than fifty cents for something that's only worth fifty cents.

The " Buffalo Rounds " you see in the infomercials nickel/copper plated in real genuine gold. Each 1oz coin is plated in 14mgs of solid gold, all for the investment price of $19.99.

Let's do the math. At the current price $1197/oz. Gold is $38.50 a gram. A milligram is 1000th of a gram, that works out to
3.85 cents of gold per coin.

As Dave said, gold plating is a way to get people to pay over fifty cents for a fifty cent piece.

Ssuper Ddave wrote "a way of getting people to pay more than fifty cents for something that's only worth fifty cents." to which I add especially at local auctions. They're more like a charm. Most of the time when I see these thy are usually dated in the 1970s.

The only time I've ever seen one of these for sale was at a school field trip to Dahlonegha, Ga back in the 90s. We toured the old mine, and the gift shop had tons of coin-related souvenirs (since the town used to operate a mint). Included was a set of coins that were plated in "Real Dahlonegha Gold!" for about $8. I imagine that most gold-plated coins probably came from sets like these.
