James Davies was one of the most active of the Birmingham 'toymen' of the late 18th and early 19th century. He produced die-stamped discs of various types, including pocket calendars, historical medalets and various tokens and counters. He was active circa 1779-1814.
Davies signed his imitation spade guinea and half-guinea gaming counters below the bust in a variety of fashions, but, according to the British Numismatic Society, those dated 1789 are all signed with the initials
"I D". His tokens are among the very earliest: those known to have been made concurrently with the genuine George III gold guineas.
