...Just took a quick look at the coin and not at any other information on the auction- That's another thing you'll pick up quick Bobby, there are sellers who are well regarded and respected, and their descriptions can be counted on to be accurate- That's the tough thing about ebay is that there are some sellers who are experts and very honest, and some who either don't know a thing about coins or do, and pretend to not... As I said before, it's a very nice looking example, and fairly priced as a problem free coin. Again, apologies if I jumped to conclusions on that coin...

Thanks again for all the input guys :) The ebay directory will definitely come in handy some time thanks for sharing xshift. I wasn't really planning on taking that 1858, so it's simply good to read all your inputs on the cleaning etc. :)

he has 3 1858s available, all have the same "color" (as do a lot of his coppers) - which could also be a lighting/photo issue.
my guess is (cleaned or not) that they look much better in hand.

This coin looks red, but without mint lustre. That's strange. Could be due to a very light acid clean, a long time ago, or it means it is a dud.
Don't like the flatness of the rim denticles, either.
I will not pass final judgment on this piece, simply because this is NOT my area of specialty. That is my honest opinion, and I will stick with it, but I am open to challenge.
Would I buy it on my current suspicions? NO.

Salmon colored coppers are a big No No for me personally. It normally means an acid dip at some time and the grunge in the devices has turned white as well. Pity quite a nice coin otherwise. Just my opinion and I tend to stick with that

Morning all. Imagine my surprise to see my coins as a subject of speculation on this forum. I can assure you that all coins, all the coins are legit. My autistic daughter is my photographer. As such, she takes great photos, large and clear. The down side is that the setup she uses has to be very simple. The camera doesn't have a white balance and the photos tend to be a bit overexposed, causing the colors to be lighter. The high resolution photo and lighter color of the coin might give the impression to some that surfaces have been altered. The coins look better in hand. The photos are such that you should be able to easily decide grade for yourself and determine any damage or undesirable marks. This makes it very easy for the buyer to decide to purchase or not. I have a no questions asked return policy on 99.9% of the items offered. I have had 2 coin returned in the past couple of years. One was damaged in transit, the other oddly enough was because the coin was a deeper brown that in the photograph. Hope that puts to rest any speculation on any of the items I have offered for sale. Bobby, you can consider this the answer to your question that you sent me through ebay.

your daughter takes excellent pics of your coins, its extremely hard to capture the true color of a coin as I aslo have problems doing so. I have bought off this seller and he has bought of me and I have had no issues at all! also almost 5000 pos feedbacks has to say something about the coins he sells

Again, apologies if I jumped to conclusions from a quick look at the photo and not at the listing... God knows my photography is certainly nothing to brag about... BTW Dan, I clicked the link to your blog and have been reading all morning :)

Dan, you might want to add your ebay ID to your profile. I was going to add it for you but thought you may not want it there for some reason. It would be helpful for people looking to see if you are a member here - and it will show a link to your ebay sales above your posts, as well.

Thank you for the clarification on your items Dan, they were bright and clear pictures taken by your daughter (as these days lots of ebay photos are just too dark to even make out the date...)Just wanted to add that it was simply for the purpose of discussion when I first put the link on the post, as I mentioned I've only been looking at Victorian large cents for the past 2 (now 3 counting today) days and loving them so far, haven't had lots of experience so would like to first get some general questions down. I still don't know if it's alright to put the item up here for discussion and will remove the post if inappropriate. Thanks and I apologize if this caused any inconvenience. --Bobby

Quote: also almost 5000 pos feedbacks has to say something about the coins he sells Unless it's offset by almost 10,000 negative feedbacks No, I like light photographs: often when I put my pictures on a white background they look too dark to make out. I'm glad our community has maintained its integrity...

Dan not sure what lighting your daughter is using but I found most off-the-shelf LEDs make copper look pink and most incandescent bulbs make copper look like a brown pastel smudge. I found that using a CFL with a color spectrum of 5000k (most CFLs are 3000k) turns out really nice results with no post processing. I am by no means an expert but you might also want to try a neutral gray or flat black background instead of white. the white background tends to throw off the auto-white-balance feature on most cameras. BELOW, camera on auto white balance, same coin, same light, 2 different backgrounds - no post processing
