Hi fellows ,

I'm new to Canadian large cents, been cruising around ebay for the past two days (not exactly my new year resolution but it just happened..)

Ran into this store and had a bit of strange feeling for some of the coins, the following is just as an example

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1858-Lg-Cen...em27db12b2fa

Do you guys think it's a genuine piece?
(My doubt was from the fact that it has a rather uniform patina, and that the legends including the dates and letters on the reverse are all quite rounded comparing to those flatter and with sharper edges seen in normal circulated coins, perhaps I just haven't seen enough in 2 days :P)

Thanks in advance for any input guys!

--Bobby

You should change the name of the post to something like help with canadian large cents so that you get a quicker response from the people more familiar with this series,
Just a thought:-) and welcome to ccf

Coin appears to have been cleaned some time ago. Check out the residue in the crevices!

Thanks thefollarman, that was a helpful advice :)

And Thanks for the reply Glenn, does cleaning like how it was done on that coin have an impact on its value?

Hey Bobby,

I would personally avoid this coin at that price, I agree with Glen on the old cleaning, and it appears to me like there's some environmental damage with a bit of recessed corrosion. 1858's are a tough coin get problem free and even with some problems that's still not a bad looking coin, but the price is on par with a problem free example in that condition

Yes buddy64 the cleaning is bad and should never be done, the cleaning of a coin also decreases the coins value and hurts the coin.
General rule is DONT clean coins and avoin cleaned coins.

Thanks for the reply jdmern! Haha I wouldn't really be able to afford a coin at that price just picked it to illustrate :)

I'd prefer natually uncleaned ones, so will probably go to another store :P

If a coin is shiny or has an unnatural appearance or a lot of hairlines(small scratches)
It is most likely cleaned.
An original coin in au or uncirculated will have a frosty surface with cartwheel luster. ( when the coin is tilted the luster looks like its rolling ).

LOL sorry about that theDollarman :P thefollarman is catchy too though...

Alright noted on the cleaning, guess is it why the beads and legends appear a bit mushy and less sharp than the uncleaned example?

I have cleaned some coins before and some of them were totally ruined (those are not copper ones so I couldn't complete relate the two), so yeah I probably will not clean another coin in my life :l

The seller is a member here and a noted authority and researcher of large cents.
The coin will be as described.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

..The seller is a CCF member in good standing and an authority on large cents, I will vouch the coin will be authentic.
