So I have been considering a different collecting direction for a while. I have been enjoying upgrading my slqs, 7070, Lincolns and IHC collections....but thinking also about trying something new.

Has anyone put together a box 20 certified NGC star collection? This would be fun, as the coins would all have great eye appeal. Morgan's are by far the easiest to find, but I'm thinking it would be challenging and fun to try to get 20 different type coins in NGC star, even if many are more modern. thoughts?

The one thing that really bother's me about the NGC "star" designation though, is that often they are used for one-sided cameo coins, which can be really deceptive as to the importance of the designation. people can be led to believe that it has exceptional eye appeal, when NGC often just labels coins that don't meet the criteria for a full cameo or deep cameo on both sides......and on proofs this can be really common. The seller advertises that this is a Pop1 coin....but I think this is just because one side is DCAM and the other is CAM....so NGC called it Star Cameo because it doesn't quite make a full DCAM or UCAM. thoughts on all this?

Don't include CAM designations in your set. Aside that, I very much like NGC's criteria for the star - I think they hold it to a high standard and I don't ever recall seeing an NGC * I didn't agree with for toning or luster. Mint State stuff only.

That would make a stupid typeset.

That actually would be a fun set to do but with only mint state coins, not cameo or deep cameos proof coins. That said I'm sure there are star proofs that got the star for rainbown toning or something like that.

Thanks for the feedback. I wonder why NGC does things this way instead of just saying "Obv Cameo" or something like that. It would really clear things up.

As I read their intent, NGC intends the star to be 100% about eye appeal, nothing else, acknowledging the visual appearance aspect of grading. This is in contrast to PCGS' "+" which indicates superiority for the grade.

I am guessing one possible reason is profit. If a grader has to enter a different set of keystrokes for each situation that would be covered by a star, those extra seconds that it would take over hundreds of coins will mean fewer coins graded. Based on NGC's grading video, the grade looks like it is entered into the computer using the num pad which conveniently has a button for a star.
