So I'm going to the bank tomorrow and either getting my fist box of Nickels, or my first box of dimes (haven't decided which yet), and had a quick question regarding nickel roll hunting... why do people keep ALL Jeffersons from 1938-1959? Why not just the Silvers/Buffalos/Key Dates?

also... What are the key dates? Can someone link me to a complete list?

Thanks!

The Jeffersons from those years had lower mintage numbers. This link will give you an idea of the key dates. https://goccf.com/t/82192

Possibly look into purchasing a Red Book by Whitman Publishing. Also, you could look up the numerous web sites that list those coins and their values. For example the PCGS web site. Also, Numismedia web site. You may want to download those pages for info purposes.
As to why keeping all of anything? No one knows why some people save or collect everything that they realllllly don't need. Some people hoard Pennies, some Nickels, some cars, some women, some money, etc. It's just human nature.
Is there a prupose in saving all or some of anything?
Start doing it and let us all know why.

Nickel Nut checking in on this thread, I'd suggest a little variety, you can get single rolls, maybe a couple quarters ($10 each), dimes are $5, nickels $2 and pennies are $.50. I'd say get a full box of nickels (be ready, lift with your knees, they are 22 pounds) and a few of each of the others, you may fall in love with dimes but try them all. Ask at the bank if they can let you have a canvas bag or two to bring them back in, I use mine to sort them on, the dirt gets on the cloth then I can just ... wait for it.... Launder my money bags, also keeps them from rolling too far. If they don't have bags to give you use an old shirt or a sheet, towels work.

About the save anything older than '60 idea, my cut off date is 1963, but if it's 60-63 I only keep if it's really 'purdy', I'd suggest to get an idea why we save them, sort into 3 piles: before 1964, 1964 only and after 1964... if the 1964 pile is smaller then the pre '64 I would be amazed.

Some banks get nasty about coin roll hunting, they don't like spending the time on all that change. my bank only has loose rolls except the main branch, so I have to drive an extra 5 miles or so. The tellers know me buy name, don't need to see my ID (I'm 6'1 and count my weight in fractions of a ton... some where between 1/7 and 1/8 and going down so when I walk in with a 20+ pound bag several times a week I'm not easily forgotten) and they ask if I found anything, I love my bank. Make sure you can get the boxes from the branch you use and do not be too upset if they give you a new box, asking for an old box might get them unhappy, they don't want to sort through 20 boxes of nickels (22 pounds, remember) to find you the ONE that is old. Work with them and they will work with you. If all they have is new boxes then don't take it, unless you want to dig through 2000 2013's looking for mint errors (I never liked that idea) then don't accept it, ask if there are any boxes that are older and if not just ask for other denominations.

There is a big area of glueNickel-Collecting-Question! if you wanted to save it and mess it all up don't get upset, after a few months and a few dozen boxes you will be ripping them open with your bare hands! Check out the link in my signature, it's about nickels, mostly

Edit: nit-picking spelling errors

If they have new boxes, take them and sell them on ebay. Looking at the completed listings, none have gone below $140+$15 shipping

That is absolutely insane, I've thought about doing that myself at times and looked at a sale that claimed they only had 7 left... supplies limited buy now, now, NOW!, and I'm betting they are just going to the bank and asking for a new box when some poor fool thinks he can't go to a bank and do the same thing for them selves. There's a sucker born every minute and I'd love to get 1.5 time face value off of it but it just seems so wrong to me.

Another very good post, don't just listen to me, keep reading. https://goccf.com/t/166322

Edit: I just realized mattph275 posted both this one and the one I just linked to, didn't want to have people get the wrong ideas, some banks hate it some don't mind
