Nickel Nut checking in on this thread, I'd suggest a little variety, you can get single rolls, maybe a couple quarters ($10 each), dimes are $5, nickels $2 and pennies are $.50. I'd say get a full box of nickels (be ready, lift with your knees, they are 22 pounds) and a few of each of the others, you may fall in love with dimes but try them all. Ask at the bank if they can let you have a canvas bag or two to bring them back in, I use mine to sort them on, the dirt gets on the cloth then I can just ... wait for it.... Launder my money bags

, also keeps them from rolling too far. If they don't have bags to give you use an old shirt or a sheet, towels work.
About the save anything older than '60 idea, my cut off date is 1963, but if it's 60-63 I only keep if it's really 'purdy', I'd suggest to get an idea why we save them, sort into 3 piles: before 1964, 1964 only and after 1964... if the 1964 pile is smaller then the pre '64 I would be amazed.
Some banks get nasty about coin roll hunting, they don't like spending the time on all that change. my bank only has loose rolls except the main branch, so I have to drive an extra 5 miles or so. The tellers know me buy name, don't need to see my ID (I'm 6'1 and count my weight in fractions of a ton... some where between 1/7 and 1/8 and going down so when I walk in with a 20+ pound bag several times a week I'm not easily forgotten) and they ask if I found anything, I love my bank. Make sure you can get the boxes from the branch you use and do not be too upset if they give you a new box, asking for an old box might get them unhappy, they don't want to sort through 20 boxes of nickels (22 pounds, remember) to find you the ONE that is old. Work with them and they will work with you. If all they have is new boxes then don't take it, unless you want to dig through 2000 2013's looking for mint errors (I never liked that idea) then don't accept it, ask if there are any boxes that are older and if not just ask for other denominations.

This cutlass type of knife works well to open if you want to save the box for storage.

cut it slowly and carefully

There is a big area of glue

if you wanted to save it and mess it all up don't get upset, after a few months and a few dozen boxes you will be ripping them open with your bare hands! Check out the link in my signature, it's about nickels, mostly
