So I bought this coin from a newer auction house for a Vcoins dealer and when it arrived it wasn't quite my cup of tea so I tossed it up on ebay and it sold. The buyer now has taken it to a 'numismatist' who believes it to be a modern fake. I told the buyer if he was unhappy with the item I would refund the price to him. I don't have a problem with that. I did ask him what the 'numismatist' said that made him believe it to be fake and will report back on that. What are your thoughts on the coin. I see nothing wrong with it in term of authenticity. It was at some point heavily overcleaned in my opinion making the patina super awkward mixed in with the dirt that is still on the coin and was missed in the cleaning. In hand it doesn't look so zombie like and more a long the lines of the portrait of Julian II but taking the picture of it was hard because the light was reflecting more so off the bronze showing than anything else. If it is fake. Oh well I paid peanuts for the coin. If it isn't I might as well just keep it as a budget example. The only thing that would change is I probably wouldn't participate in that auction anymore! Edited by Whizb4ng 01/05/2014 3:19 pm

If you have a look at acsearch and search for Julian II bull, there are many examples of the coin from the Cyzicus mint including this one which is a contemporary imitation. http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=671184I would like to know what identifies your coin as a "fake".

I see nothing wrong with it. The guy is probably going to return it, at his cost, I assume. this type is pretty popular though, so you shouldnt have trouble selling it a second time.
It might be worth taking the rest of the dirt off, removing whats left of the patchy patina and leaving it to get a copper tone.

Roughed up a bit by a harsh cleaning but it appears genuine. Even the fracture has attributes I associate with a good coin. If it were a fake someone went to a tremendous amount of effort to produce it. Some toning to darken the copper colored areas would make it look less 'scrubbed' I think with some minor adjustment it would fetch a reasonable price.
BTW what did the 'chump' pay for it that he is all hot and bothered ?

It appears to have encrusted desert patina, even in the fracture. Looks good.

Thanks for reassuring what I already thought. I knew it was overcleaned when I first saw it but I paid around 10 bucks if I remember right and he bought it for 15. At least he doesn't hate me! He has already bid on an item I put up today.

The coin looks legit but it appears to have been cleaned by electrolysis.

Most likely the winning bidder/ buy-it-nower felt they overpaid, maybe they have an issue with the scratch on the reverse, anyhow it looks real, despite being aware of the faking of "Desert Patinas", this looks real.
Be surprised if they tell you the name of the "numismatist".
Be surprised if they reply to you.
Be surprised if they return it to you.

Well keep it simple amigo. Is it about 18mm or more at 28mm.
Either way I like the 'type'

At fifteen dollars it is a good buy. He won't send it back. He is just hoping you will offer a rebate. Don't do it.
