Saw this on another forum. Complete Set 1826 - 1857 Large Cent Collection in Display Plaque http://www.ebay.com/itm/Complete-Se...em3cdabdaf0f Stuff like this makes me cringe. Unfortunately a large percentage of the non-collecting public and some ill-informed collectors still don't know that polishing coins is something to avoid. You may have seen my thread about attending a small auction that had some coins on Friday. There were several older gentlemen there looking over the coin offerings talking about 'coin improvement' whom were under the impression that one could just polish up a coin to make it more valuable. These were long time collectors saying this.

You'll notice that the current bid on the set is WAY low. That's the way it will stay unless a couple rookies step up and start bidding.

Ive never understood the logic of polishing up cents like that, they just look weird. I can at least see how making a silver coin shiny could be pleasing to eye, those I just dont get it.

Thanks for warning me about cleaning coins. I was just about to clean up my 179X large cents.

"Hi,
It appears as though the coins may have been lightly cleaned. Other than that, there are no apparent signs of alteration or any other issues.
Thanks,
Tony" lightly cleaned? I'm surprised he admitted that much. This seller is going on my no buy list for sure.

"Lightly cleaned"--as in 'impaired MS'? Let me guess this dealer knew the true condition of this set when they bought it.

Every single coin there has obviously been harshly cleaned. What will happen is someone will but the lot and recolor the coins and release them on unsuspecting customers. Currently at $255 that is $8 per coin.

Even if retoned, those coins won't bear close scrutiny--probably resold as the same set. As I've said, the numismatic value is in the struck surface, not the inner core of a coin

Cipster, thanks a lot. I was taking a bite when I read that... Quote: Cleaning coins is a simple process and will restore coins to a shiny and beautiful state. Cleaning coins also removes any dirt, germs, or bacteria which may have built up over time. Scary quote. Know where I found it? On ebay's site (and am not putting in the link - google how to clean coins ebay and it will be in the top 5). While it says not to clean valuable coins, it recommends gently scrubbing the coin with a soft or extra-soft toothbrush. (oops, there went the rest of lunch). It get worse from there. How are we to help educate new coin collectors when ebay is putting up this trash?
