This set recently came in to a LCS. They are asking more then they would for a opened set. I am thinking about buying it. Opinions - Would you pay more? Would you open it? Or maybe not buy it .. because you too would want to open it? I do wonder, why would someone never open this set? And would I open it, if I purchase it. I don't really need a 1955 proof set, I just think it is cool. For those members that may have not seen a box set. 1955 was the last year they came like this. They did have both this box and the flat pack in 1955.

Personally, no more than $100. The unopened factor is cool....just does not add any value...imho.

Quote: is there a chance of a high grade deep cameo Franklin? Yes that is the gamble. But it would have to be at least a PR68 light cameo to make it a worthwhile chance....imho Could be a good buy.....I , however would be conservative

I know you are right ...
and with my luck ... they would be spotty ... nasty looking coins.
They are asking a little over a hundred.

If your wanting a cameo Franklin I would go for one I could see. This one was a little less than $100

That's not far out of line with what opened original-packaging sets are going for on ebay. I'd be sore tempted.

I would not pay more for it AND I would open in front of the sellers. While this may be a little cynical, it might give fun for the sellers to see what they have sat on for all these years. If there really is a problem, you can deal with it then and there. Just don't jump up and down in front of the sellers if you it is a cameo (as I have been known to do)

I would buy it in a heartbeat and NOT open it....the mystery factor is something a lot of people can't resist. Obviously by your question you would be buying this to make money on it and I would bet on ebay it would go crazy....people love unopened stuff!

I too would go along with buying it and reselling it on ebay. Who knows you might end up making a lot of money on it. If you buy it and open it and find it's all messed up, then what. Almost 60 years can do a lot to anything.

There is no way that I could resist the temptation. If you buy it, you need to open it.

I agree with the price being not much more than for an open set, and I would open it. I see no " cool factor " in an unopened set. Nor would I pay a premium for it. I know that I have made this analogy in other threads regarding this subject but, I could never see the added value in buying a box of baseball cards and sticking them on a shelf, unopened, as an "investment" ? " Show Me The Money "

It all boils down to the motivation....
Are you buying it for the coins or the profit. If for the coins...open it by all means! If for profit...keep it sealed! Maybe if it is sealed you can submit it to PCGS for "first strike" designation.....lol

For me, with the exception of one or two coins, all my coins are for sale .. at the right price .. For this set, I have broken open 1955 proof set .. and put them in 2X2 boxes .. so would not just be the coins. I am sure everyone wants the coins they buy/acquire .. to be worth more then they paid for them ... that would be why the thought of a cameo Franklin. (muddle, yourmaking it hard seeing that nice one of yours) Also .. my brother was born in 1955 .. I am sure part of the cool factor might be ... having something he might want ..just to get some digs in ... If you watch enough antique road show .. collectables are worth more in a sealed box ... Gotta have vision, what will this be worth in 2055?

Read an earlier post of a friend of mine who bought a 1937 "unopened" set off ebay.. Turned out, when he opened it, they were all cleaned coins and some were not even proof. Buy the coin not the package. I would open it right away if I bought it. AND remove the coins from the packaging and put them into airtites.

I would stay away from it. Unopened adds no premium to me.
