I must start by saying I have no idea what I have. I run a towing company and I found this coin in an abandoned vehicle. I will try and get a few pics up as soon as I can.

I cannot find any reference to this coin anywhere on the net.

It looks like a Morgan Silver Trade Unit but on the face of the coin, the main head of the coin is surrounded by the following.

""Howard Ruff's Sixth Annual National Convention"

To the right of the bust in the lower corner is a very large '83

Of course, on the back at the top it says "ONE TROY OUNCE" with "31.1 Grams" beneath it, on the bottom, it says ".999 Fine Silver" and ""SILVER TRADE UNIT" below that.

It appears to be in very good condition and even retains a very good mirror like finish in many areas. (gives me the impression it actually isn't that old) The coin is dated 1879 on the face.

Howard Ruff was a believer in investing in gold and silver. What you have is probably a silver round which may have been sold or given away at his conventions. Here is the Wikipedia blurb about the man.
