I picked this item up today, from what I was told these were recovered from the remains of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The one coin looks thicker then the others but they are fused together, no date can be seen on the top Indian and I can't make out anything else. I want to pop it open so bad but I don't want to ruin such a weird piece of history.

The story is not implausible. Frankly, I'd rather keep it as-is and believe the story.

Wow nice find Matthewvincent, maybe the old man took more then just that as a souvenir. I might have to get in contact with the writer of this story. I have no reason to doubt the story I have with these coins.
