do you think R3 or R4 large cents in the vf range carry any premium over lower R rated coins?

IMO, maybe a few R3's. R4's a bit more but I think the real premium starts around R5.

It mostly depends on demand except when there are only a few in existence. There is no exact science to this. At R4 you are talking about 75-200 coins estimated to be in existence. So figure if 500 people want a certain R-4 variety with only 75-200 in existence there will be a premium. If only 50 want a certain R-4 variety there most likely will not be a premium. But again there are no set rules.

makes sense I suppose. supply seems low and most of these are in collections and are not readily for sale often I would think

I should also mention that the condition of the coin DOES matter. If it's a scudzy (corroded, rim bumps, many scratches, etc.) R-4 coin with no eye appeal don't expect a premium.

absolutely correct. I posted an R-3 1851 N-19 that I think is pretty decent. small premium maybe.

I have a real poor 1797 Stemless R5 LC, I doubt I'd get a premium for it, maybe a little, but doubtful, so I concur with condition even at an R5 rarity. Above that though, I think scarcity really comes into play. R3, I have never paid a premium for an R3 variety.

1844/81 is an R-2 and 1857 is an R-1, both coins command a premium. I could mention others with R-1 or R-2 ratings that also command a premium. It has to do with DEMAND in a lot of instances. There are no set rules with rarity and price!
