Looking through my inherited collection, and came across what I think is a 1903 Micro S. What would you grade it as? Excuse my poor iPhone pics...

As a beginner, I knew it wasn't in good condition, but wasn't sure if it had been cleaned/polished. That isn't good.

No, cleaning is not good, If something says it is 111 years old then it's better to look 111 years old, not only that but I'd agree it's been polished and that is really bad, may have been worn down in someone's pocket but looks like it was worked over with silver polish, which might make it look brighter but also digs the surface away and destroys the smaller details, so the poor quality of the S is due to polishing, not just cleaning.
Rest in Peace

So considering the rare mint mark, does it still retain some value over melt? Not sure how many of these are out there.

should have said may be due to polishing. a variation is nice and might help retain some value but the lesson to learn is leave her be, let the old lady shine on her own.

They're not really difficult to find but yes, it retains added value because of its' date/mint mark - 1903-S is pretty scarce on the ground. The VAM-2 classification doesn't help value in this condition.
