Hi CCF, I have collected coins for as long as I can remember due to the influence of my dad and grandfather, but have only recently gotten into it more seriously. I received this Morgan a couple of weeks ago in one of those 90% silver coin lots on ebay, which may not have been the best value but definitely got me a good variety of silver coins (and I did get some really nice coins in the lot.) Anyway, enough talk. My optimistic, and totally unprofessional guess puts this coin at some grade of Fine or Very fine. What do you guys think? (sorry, I only have access to an iphone camera ATM. Also, what are your alls' thoughts on the tarnish?)

Awesome thanks guys! To save opening a new thread, is the tarnish something that could be removed with an acetone dip or would I be better off leaving it be? I kinda like the dark look of it but am curious about what acetone would do to it.

Acetone will have no effect whatsoever on the coin - the toning is not organic. That's a good thing because the moment that toning starts going away, the coin becomes just another lump of silver.

Thanks Dave! You know, at first I much preferred Peace dollars to morgans, but the more I compare the two the more I like the morgans. My next purchase will be the dansco 7171 and I'm going to work towards filling it. My grandpa used to have a complete date set of morgans 30 or so years ago but they were stolen by house burglars.

I'm sorry to hear of your grandfathers loss but I also would like to welcome you to the quest although some may call it an addition.

Quote: what are your thoughts on the tarnish? One man's tarnish is another man's patina. I love it. This is how a circulated Morgan should look IMHO. Don't do anything to "improve" it.

VF-25 - beautiful coin toning is perfect for the grade. You'll see many 1889-CC's, etc... in slabs with similar grade and toning. No need to treat it!

Thanks guys! I really appreciate it. I got a great uncirculated 1886 today. Number 2 in the 7171! And so it begins :D

I got into Morgans about 6 months ago.
I think crack cocaine is less adictive. Be warned.
