What do you think the grade is on this one? What would you recommend to use to get off the "gunk"?

I'd grade this one around EF40-45--nice strike!
I would not try to remove the crud, it's part of the 'history' of the coin.
If you dissolved it away, there might be brighter patches of metal that would scream "cleaned!"

I never see those in that kind of condition, usually there grades are quite low. Its a very nice penny.

It appears to be a Snow-4.
If so you should see doubling on a lot of the letters in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Need larger/sharper image to be sure.
Rest in Peace

It would have a shot at 50 with some luster. From the photos, the fields look to have little to no luster, so I will stick with 45.

You can probably remove the gunk, but you'll regret doing it. Under the gunk is a surface uncolored by time like the rest of the coin, so the result will be an obviously-cleaned coin with bright patches.
