So at the surf show in the hall next door I'm watching people go in and they're stopping every single person at the door and SCANNING an ID card that they have to get at registration.
The room we're in, with likely over a billion dollars in merchandise in it, has a few people at the door glancing at a ribbon hanging from your neck.
Interesting.....

Yup, but it's not about the value of what's in the room. The surf show is a place where retailers place orders from wholesalers (in this case, on beach-related merchandise). They aren't letting anyone in unless they are a wholesaler or an authorize reseller - and so all sales inside the exhibit hall will be exempt from sales tax.
Which is too bad, because I thought I might pop in and get my husband a t-shirt to thank him for dropping me off at the show. No such luck. So at FUN I got him a 1 oz silver bullion piece in the shape of a 45 caliber bullet. Should help with our werewolf problem.

Yup. I was at the CCF FUN show last time and that surf show was there as well. Must coincide with the FUN show each year.

Coin folks are just so much more trustworthy than those surfer dudes.

I just took one of them out, skateboarding right at me (yes, inside on the concourse) while texting on his phone. Just dropped a shoulder, and of course he looked at me from the ground like it was my fault.

Hey can one of you guys at the FUN show take a picture of "Lucky Surf Club", they are at the surf show. The business is owned by some friends of mine here in Maryland.

Sorry but the public is not allowed in. The exhibitors are wholesalers and the visitors must be legit retailers.

In regard to security at the FUN show, it was actually rather impressive. Much of the security personnel was in plain clothes, you'd never recognize them. I had a conversation with the head of security, I'd recognized him from the ANA show in August. After the FUN show his team was heading up security for the PGA tour- these guys don't joke around! Probably no surprise, but nearly every member of the security team was ex-law enforcement or government intelligence. That is except for the gargantuan guys dressed in black- they were Florida University Football players. Security at coin shows appears minimal, but if you pay close attention you'll see there's very real reasons to feel safe. Traveling with valuables or money, this makes us feel very comfortable at large shows.
