Hello everyone, I am 100% new to coin collecting, and I would like to get an opinion on my late grandfather's collection. I will be asking about one set in particular that he left. It is a bag straight from the mint sewn shut with 200$ USD in Silver Dollars. I am not 100% if they are Eisenhower or Liberty dollars as it is sealer, but if I could get an estimate on the worth of both of them I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You.

Welcome to the Forum! Open the bag. If you want to know it's value that is the only way. If these coins are old then they have even more value. Pull one out and take a good quality picture and post it on here and we can give you an estimate of it's value.

Open the bag. If you want it't true potential for value, you will have to sell each coin by it's self. If you sell the whole bag you will be giving the buyer a HUGE disscount. So open her up. I would...
And welcome. Ty

Cut open the bag, you either have a great treasure or you can spend $200 on some nice coins. Good luck.

OK...I'm going to be the odd one and ask you to post a picture of the bag prior to saying that it should or should not be opened. I'd like to see just what information is on it, as well as get an idea as to its age. Just curious, I guess.
I'm sure everyone else is right about maximizing value by selling the coins individually...though once opened you can't go back.

I agree with taking a picture of the bag first now. But still open it eventually. Or I'll raise the bar to $250. Sorry Jim

Haha thank you all for the advice and the offers :P. I will be away from the bag's location for another two weeks or so. I will photograph the bag while I am around it and upload the pictures. If you all advise that I should open the bag, I will photograph each one of the coins at a high resolution.

Sounds good
However taking a pic of each one isn't necessary unless they have some value to them. If it were a bag of Peace Silver Dollars or older then I'd recommend it.

That just seems like a lot of work, cutting open the bag, taking pictures, lets go $350 and I will take on the burden of opening up the bag and taking the pictures. No need to thank me, I am willing to take one for the team and make a few sacrifices. Just do not tell my wife, I promised no more coin purchases for a month.

Post a picture of the bag. It might be worth more in the bag than just as separate coins.

Before OPENING the bag - Try to find out as much info as possible. ie.. When and where did your Grandfather obtain the bag. Someone in the family may know. Are you sure they are Silver Dollars and NOT Sacagawea's? Is it Mint Sewn or Bank ( or Federal Reserve ) sewn? To Me, finding the History of the bag would be as much fun as discovering its contents.
Just imagine, a $200.00 bag of GEM BU - Carson City - Morgans.
