An oddball from that Stack's mixed lot of Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines I recently bought. No idea what it is. Do any of you recognize it? Medieval? Early modern? ~29 mm, 13.9 gm Looks like the legend is A M A R Ç I R [or V attached to R?] A D _____ (no idea which is the starting letter) Edited by ThisIsFun 01/11/2014 5:11 pm

I tried variations of the letters and came up with a reference to Occitan, spoken from the 10th century in France, Italy in Spain. Don't suppose that helps much.

Can you tell what it's made of? The style, the fact that it seems to be uniface and what may be a thread channel, I suspect it may be a seal, though it does not appear to be made of lead.

A seal? Never thought of that Sap!
I see what appears to be bronze disease, most of what appears stabalized. My guess is it is bronze or copper.

It does look seal-ish. The metal is bronze though.

The word I'm seeing is AMARGVRA ("bitterness, sorrow"), or even AMARGVRADA (the adjective "embittered" modifying a feminine noun), from Spanish, Portuguese, or some Iberian dialect.
