I saw this coin in the Newman auction, and now here it is on ebay. NGC graded it AU58, problem free, but to me it very distinctly appears to be written on in pencil. The Heritage description did not mention it, nor does the ebay seller. Can you guys help me out here? Am I missing something? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1838-50c-NG...em3f2dcf5ca2

Sure looks like it. I wouldn't have even tried to clean it off......but I would think the right thing to do would be to mention it by both the grader and the seller. Maybe when they graded it they decided it did not do damage to the coin so just considered it as part of being a slightly dirty coin? Not sure, just thinking out loud.....

Eric Newman, 102-Year-Old Coin Collector, Sells 1,800 Piece Collection For $23 Million, might have something to do with it. Just the "Prestige" I guess, makes no sense to drop that many dollars on a 50 cent piece.

I was just about to post what Aslan did. It likely got a pass due to the pedigree.
Quite a few coins in that collection have CAC stickers on them, I dont think its a big mystery why this one doesn't.

If that is indeed pencil writing, would there be a way to remove it without damaging the coin?

I understand your point, denco7, but if the writing is intrinsically valuable, wouldn't someone MENTION it?
I mean, you wouldn't clean Tom Brady's autograph off of your football, but you'd sure-as-shooting note it in the auction description.

If you have no provenance, the mystery is of " more " value.

I didn't think scribbling on a coin made it more valuable, but I guess you learn something every day. Please excuse me while I go autograph my entire collection.

I don't understand how something like that slabs problem free--and graffiti wouldn't

Maybe I missed something about what the meaning of whats written on there but it doesn't seem to match up with the pedigree like initials, and I dont remember seeing stuff like that on the other coins from the collection.
I can see the autograph type argument if it was done on everyone, but being done on just a coin looks much more like ngc just did him a favor on that one being scared to call it details.

Wonder if NGC would give me a "pass" on counterstamped coins?

Fireman has, to me, the best explanation, along with the fact that it got the pass because of whose collection it was in. I just say that since usually when you see something to genuine due to graffiti it is engraved into the coin. If the grader made the determination that the pencil marks in this case did not alter the surfaces of the coin, would it grade or not grade? I don't know the standards on this, so it is just my guess that they might allow it to pass, along with the fact it is from a famous collection.
Bottom line though, even with the pedigree, you would think someone over at NGC would have the good sense to say, "Do we really want a coin like this in one of our problem free slabs?" Kind of make them looks bad.
