Why do you suppose it is that some U.S. sellers of coins on ebay advertise that they will ship to "the lower 48" only?

I've even noticed that some of our members from this forum make that comment in their ebay listings.

I ship to Alaska and Hawaii all the time. It's the same as shipping to California or Illinois...isn't it?

Rest in Peace

You would think so. Maybe a couple extra bucks. Good question.

I know priority is the same. For ebay at least first class is the same as well. Hawaii can have some extra customs requirements but that shouldnt affect coins.

My best guess if they dont know its the same price and/or they dont want to send things there if they werent planning on using tracking.

has anyone seen a stamp with the motto "Air-mail" lately? No, that is because it's all air-mail unless it is local. I have seen some tracing info on my purchases and they all say the same thing, if they are on a truck. They go past my place in Montana and get to Washington state to get sorted then get sent back to me on a smaller truck. Postage, distribution hubs and ease of package movement, if you figured that out you'd be a billionaire.

I ship only to the US, including Alaska and Hawaii. I can only wonder if it may be due to the shipping time.
I have only sent 2 to Alaska, both times they sat for a couple days at the last point prior to their destination. Maybe lack of flights?) It seems the total time for me anyhow has been 5-6 days VS the normal 4 days for other US orders.
Maybe the sellers are afraid of getting dinged on shipment time, I have free shipping 99% of the time so it's only a guess on my part.

Puerto Rico's no different either. US zip codes and the state is PR.

I will ship priority to these places, and I will also send it to Alaska or Hawaii as long as they contact me first. A lot of my items that I ship are big heavy boxes that I really don't want to send as far as Alaska or Hawaii. I also just calculate my shipping prices to Washington state which will be the highest price. If I calculated everything shipping to Alaska, it would be higher, where as I calculate to Washington. There is also a much bigger chance of shipping something to California or Washington rather than Alaska or Hawaii.

I don't agree with the practice - I'll do Hawaii/Alaska and APO's even though I don't sell Internationally - but I can see someone feeling it's an additional complexity they don't want to risk.

Like I said, if I didn't sell anything big and heavy, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I have just had trouble before shipping boxes like this a ways and I really don't like risking it.

What's even more frustrating for us Canadians is finding a great seller with great items.....only to find out they will not ship to Canada. It's getting more and more common.

Have you tried sending a message to them? I bet most would ship to Canada if you paid the shipping.

Tried it numerous times. Last response I got from the last seller was too much paperwork and too much hassle. I ship worldwide.....paperwork with Canada post is the same amount anywhere. Just seems to me to be a way to close out a lot of potential buyers. Gets a little frustrating at times.

Fireman I will say this about shipping to Canada, for whatever reason both times I did it neither went smoothly. I had a baseball glove take almost a month to clear customs and finally be delivered and the other item wasnt a whole lot faster. I shipped to AUS once too and the package was stolen at the airport either in chicago or aus before being scanned in their.

The worry would be if you get someone less than honest or impatient who opens the never got the item case while its in customs and they force a refund then a couple weeks later the item shows up and the sellers out both.

Maybe I've just had bad luck with it but international shipping was anything but smooth and easy for me.
