This is a 1943-S Nickel and I am not sure what happened, any ideas? The irregular-shaped mass by the rim is raised so I am not sure how it could be a lamination error. It's almost as though there was an extra piece of metal on the planchet before it was minted. I've not seen this before. All opinions are appreciated, thanks.

Looks like the lower half of the date peeled, leaving the upper part looking like it is raised?

Actually the lower half is the same depth as the rest of the obverse. Weird huh?

If I had to guess, I'd guess a blob of glue, varnish or something similar. Or perhaps a blob of solder.

Can you get an image a little more back. It maybe a struck though debris in that area. But I think I see a lamination issue below the "Y & Star?" It may have peeled off and leaving the bottoms of the devices thinner?
