Today I received back from ICCS three of my favorite NFLD five cent pieces: Details regarding the 1880 5 Cent Double Die can be found on p. 24 of the 2013 Charlton. In short, this variety is an example of hub doubling which is apparently quite rare. The VF-30 was purchased from my friend, noted dealer Hugh Powell, and the AU-55 was cherry picked from the UK for $350. The 1888 Obverse 2 was also cherry picked for $260 at a local show. Included below are images of the AU-55 prior to grading. Note the doubling on the eyes, nose and lips. http://s1224.photobucket.com/user/B...74e.png.html] [/URL] Comments? Valuations? Ridicule? Input is invited! Thanks for reading, as always.

Hugh Powell is one of my favourite dealers: a gentleman at the bourse table and a good friend at the pub...

Wow! Very nice coins. I recently started a NFLD collection and some of the 5c are difficult in any condition. I hadn't seen a 1888 Obv. 2 before.

Hi! Just a quick introduction: I'm the webmaster of the Saskatoon Coin Club's web site and Facebook page. I'm currently working on a huge identification guide for all Atlantic province coins. I need photos of the 1880 Newfoundland 5 cent double die, and your post came up in the search results. WOW it's hard to find decent quality photos of this coin! Would you mind if I used your images in my guide? I would be happy to attribute the photos in any way you like...

Unfortunately I'm not allowed to e-mail yet. I haven't posted enough in here to turn on the e-mail function. I'm waiting patiently for the NEW MEMBER flag to disappear.
Every time I reply or start a new post it's like pulling the handle on a slot machine... lol

Well I added the images and made up a legit looking image credit. Hoping for eventual forgiveness in lieu of permission... lol It's grainy as heck, but it will have to do for now. The detail photo is nice enough though, and that's what's most important...

Wow! Those double die 1880's are awesome. Its very rare to see examples in such good condition. Nice find and good buys. Congrats. The 1888 NF2 has a book value of about $2500!
