I just purchased a partial set of Large Cents in a Dansco album and was wondering if anyone has a good web site to help me figure out the different varieties that are listed in it. I want to make sure the coins I got in the album are the correct varieties for the spots they're in before I start working on filling the holes. I'll also need something to help me out on what to look for when I start filling the holes.

I searched the forum here and found a link to http://www.coinfacts.com/large_cents but that post was from 2010 and it appear that it's now owned by PCGS and requires a monthly membership. Are there any free web sites that offer good comparison photo's of the different varieties or would it be best to join the PCGS coinfacts site to help me out? Can I print the photo's from the PCGS Coinfacts website to keep for reference? I really don't want to spend $100-$200 for a book on large cents.

Why not just use a Red Book? They list varieties.

I do have a couple Red Books and the newest is 2011 but the pictures are small and I don't think it shows pictures for all the varieties that the Dansco has spots for. It's OK for some of the varieties but it's hard to see the difference on some as well. I was looking for a web site that might show a side by side comparison and maybe a description of exactly what to look at to tell the varieties apart.

I don't have any pictures of the coins yet but here's a link to the ebay listing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/28123663528....m1497.l2649
The listing photo's aren't very good and I couldn't really see the coins very well so I took a risk and ended up winning the auction. I just got them today and I'm very pleased with the purchase. The early ones pretty worn on the obverse but the dates are all readable. There are also a couple with pitting and a couple that were cleaned but overall there are a whole bunch that are very nice looking coins. Plus the listing says there are 41 large cents in the book but there is actually 44 !! I've always wanted to start a set of large cents so this purchase gives me a very good start and I can always upgrade coins in it later.

There isn't a great resource online for large cent attributing unless you were to check out earlycents.com or some early copper dealer who has great photo references of stock they're selling with descriptions on the varieties. Which is why I have the books "Penny Whimsy" by Sheldon and the Newcomb book for the coronets and braided hair series.

It will take some work but try for early dates (1793 - 1814)
http://images.goldbergauctions.com/...ng=1&sale=54

and for middle dayes (1816 - 1839)
http://images.goldbergauctions.com/...ng=1&sale=59

These sites are goood because the coins are higher grade and the collection contains every variety from 1793 to 1839 including all of the NC (non-collectible) early date varieties

There is no way you are going to be able to identify the late dates from on-line photos.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I appreciate the help and I'll be checking out the web sites you posted and I'll have to see if I can find any of those books for a reasonable price. I don't need to know every different type, just the ones listed in the dansco album. Thanks again !!

What I would recommend you do is for those dates in the album that have different varieties, go to the sites I listed and download the pictures for the varieties of that date. Then put them in a document that you can either access on your computer or print out so you have them all in one place and you can make quick comparisons rather than having to flip back and forth from one web page to another.
