Poll Question
If you were working an 8 hour shift at a credit union on a VERY slow Saturday, which denomination would you choose to search? We don't have enough halves or dollars to search. If you choose 'Something Else' please share :)

Nickels and Dimes... Quarters are too high of a profile and used all the time, halves are never used but picked over by CRH's all the time.

Edit: pennies are a nice thing on a rainy day too, I have $50 ready for the Monday vacation for the banks.

Pennies and nickels. You'll find commemoratives, copper, the possibility of silver, many more interesting foreign coins (people will put anything into a penny roll), and many more finds from the 30s, 40s and 50s than you would with any other denomination. In Canada, it's even better because you can set aside nickels made of nickel (1981 and earlier), which are worth about 7 cents each right now.

Would you just be looking for Silver nickels and dimes or do you look for varieties? I'm looking for the most productive thing. I've already acquired quite a few rolls of LWC from CRH at work. The winter tends to be extremely slow.

I would definitely search Quarters, because there are so many different designs and some of them I really like.

I would have to agree, you would have a greater chance of finding something from another country that got passed off as a nickel or a nice rare nickel. I don't like to rule out an older piece that looks like its never been touched.

For me I would definitely go through the nickels...

My problem is that I haven't been doing this long enough to know what "rare" is. I would have to reference materials for every coin I encountered..aside from Silver, that is.

Well, foreign coins are usually obvious, and most people set aside all wheat-ear cents, nickels from before 1960, etc.

If you have a supply of Susan B Anthonys at the bank I would search those for the 79 wide rim.

If not Id go with nickels. You can usually find some older dates and War Nickels since roll hunters seem to leave those alone for the most part.

As far as loose change in the drawer, I'm more likely to search cents. I can usually spot a War Nickel through the clear bank rolls. Same with silver in quarter and dime rolls before I break them for the drawer. If I happen to notice, I'll pull pre-1960 nickels out too.

i chose pennies. I love looking through them. possibility of copper, wheat, IHC (rare though), errors, beautiful UNC pennies, I save them all. always been passionate about the one cent coin, not so much on nickels through quarters.

I would go through paper notes....I have had some amazing finds at banks from the "old, tattered, and too old" drawer. Found a crisp beautiful $10 North Africa note once and got it for face!

I'd say go with nickels as well.

You get the best of all worlds: silver, a few dates worth $5 or so, out of circulation coins like Buffalo nickels and nickels, and the chance to find foreigns.

I do 2 boxes of nickels and 2 boxes of cents a week to go with my 14 boxes of halves.

How can you tell the War Nickels through the clear wrappers, looking at only the edge?
