I picked up this relatively common date 1869 3CN at the local coin store this afternoon. I'm pretty pleased with the strike, which was not always strong in this series. The "A" in states is partly missing due to a filled die, I would suppose. This coin's surface does not appear as flat in real life as it does in the photos.

No...there is no luster left, but the surfaces appear consistent with a circulated nickel. I think the lighting for my photos has washed out some of the natural contrast. I'm happy with the coin, and got it for VF money.
