Picked this up for US$1. Shop owner figured it had lost legal tender status. I bet a dollar it was still good. So did I guess right?

Yep, they're still good. Bargain of the day, there.

Shop owner is wrong. It is worth at least 20 bucks, cat. value probably nearer $30 (AUD). Issued between 1985 and 1989.

Good work on the note and an interesting note even the predecimal coins and notes can still be swapped for legal tender today the only ones which can't are the holey dollar and the dump but if you had one of those you wouldn't be wanting to swap it for a few measly dollars now.

You would probably have a little trouble finding anyone prepared to pay more than face plus shipping for it, in that condition.

You might also have some difficulty getting a local moneychanger to accept it, since they are considered "obsolete and withdrawn".

Here in Australia they are still legal tender and still theoretically acceptable by shops and banks, but in practice it might also prove difficult to actually try and spend it; since they haven't been issued since the mid-1990s it would be difficult to find someone behind a checkout who recognized it for what it was.

Tell you what, to save you some fuss and bother, you could sell it to me for two bucks, plus postage.

... just kidding ...

But seriously, any bank here in Australia would exchange it for $20, so if it is too worn to collect, hang on to for your next holiday in Aussieland.
