I think I'm ready to move beyond swapping out SD cards from my laptop to the camera. Is there software which will let me control my camera from my pc?

Nope. Point-and-shoot cameras rarely support tethering software (Canon's haven't for years) and I don't think there's much of anything that will even work with a Pentax dSLR.

I was thinking that.

Is there a way to connect the camera to the PC and use the controls on the camera and eliminate passing through the SD card?

I was thinking having it hooked up to PC via the USB cable. And also using the self timer to release the shutter.
