Visit my LSC today looking for a 1921 Peace for my 7070. He had two, one was a PCGS MS 62 high relief. Does high relief refer specifically to the quality of the strike or something more specific? The coin looked great but after some research his ask was high. Any help in understanding high relief would be appreciated.

High relief refers to the dies (deeper) and the subsequent coins they produce. The devices are raised higher above the fields than is typically the case, thus "high relief".

Its my understanding that all 1921 Peace dollars were made with high relief dies. They made the 1922 dies with less relief.

Thanks, that helps and raises another question. If Fuzzy is correct, why are some graded ones marked and some not? Would it have something to do with later die states?

I know that high relief coins are more valuable because they wore out faster than the other coins

The proofs for 1922 were also high relief. All 1921 Peace dollars are high relief.

They're all high relief. Between striking difficulty and poor stacking, they abandoned the concept. Be careful in your search. They vary widely in strike quality; hold out for a good one. Most are flat and uninspiring.

If I could find a 1921 Peace dollar that looks my avatar I would be in the market. Over 10 years of looking I've found two I like, but they do not show as much detail as any ordinary post 1921 strike. [EDIT: here's a really good one http://www.ebay.com/itm/1921-PEACE-...em2a30ef15e4 ] The striking force for the 1921 was high in order to try to achieve full details on the highest points, but rarely worked. The weakness always shows on Liberty's hairlines (indistinct) and on the eagle's right leg (appears to have a bite taken out next to the juncture with the body). Here's the best struck 1921 I have. The deeper hair details are there, but the highest lines didn't fill in and are flat. Note the crack in the planchet at 3 o'clock - they weren't holding back the striking force. I hope you can do better than this, but I've seen MS65's with less detail.

Whoa, that is a nice '21. The best thing about mine is the seconday album toning on the rim from a previous cleaning. It looks very flat. I think I am going to have it replaced. I want a much nicer one for my album.

I've seen high MS coins which are missing the little spit curl over the cheek. In a good 1921 strike Liberty's cheek is chubby looking. Much more lifelike than post 1921, but rarely well executed.

Take a look at this one thq. Not as sharp as your avatar but about as good as it gets for this date.

Quote: Your '21 is stunning BH I wish it was mine! That's a PCGS MS66 from CoinFacts and it would likely sell for $10k+.
