I would not have bought this proof box before I had an idea of what
I wanted to do. So, go back to what you were thinking at the time.
I suspect the answer is already within you.

I would open it but for a very different reason. From reading enough posts here, I do believe in 1955, envelope enclosed sets were NOT sealed when they left the mint. If the flap is now sealed it is because someone wetted it or humidity over the years has sealed it. If it was someone who sealed it, there is the possibility the coins inside may NOT be 1955. I would want to check for sure.

The way to look at this is what happens to that set if something bac happens to you? Being old and no one to leave my coins to, I think like this all the time. I open everything now. Might not be a later.

What are the chances if you opened it you would find something in there that would make it worth significantly more than you paid for it? Very low.

What are the chances that you would find something that would make it worth much LESS than what you paid for it? Much greater.

What are the chances that it will turn out to just be an average set and therefor worth slightly less than what you paid? About average.

What are the chances that you can sell it unopened for significantly more than you paid to someone else who has dreams of finding "Treasure" in the box? Very high.

Options 2 and 3 result in a loss, option 1 has the chance for a windfall but is very unlikely, option 4 has the best chance at returning a guaranteed profit if left unopened. I'd go with option 4.

I am not in it for the profit, however, rupester may be and that has to be considered.

Profit aside...

In case you need more persuasion, think about the coins. They were minted to be enjoyed, not hidden away in a sealed container!

Open it!

How many people in 2014 can say that they were the first to lay eyes on coins that had not been seen since they were minted in 1955?
