So today I was out on the hunt went to the big town LCS and inquired about proof sets. He is mostly sold out so he just brought his box out. And there in all it's 59 year old glory sat a unopened 55 proof set. And someone had loved it enough they had enclosed it in a vacuum sealed bag to further protect it. Not one mark on the envelope and looking as pristine as ever. Of course a premium attached but nowhere near ebay premium. So I snapped up this sweet little treat of history and brought it home with a couple other unopened proof sets 62,63 which I promptly opened and didnt find anything. But here I am staring at this 1955 set.. And if it could talk I swear it keeps saying....DONT YOU DARE MISTER.... Ok my coin friends... Do I open it or preserve it? I have a amazing 1955 set in the mail from my coin guy so I dont need to open it.. And the CPG doesn't really attribute 1955 proof coins.. But still...the urges...the voices in my head...would I feel guilt? What would you do?

I would open it. You can always vacuum seal it again if you wish.

The only reason to keep it sealed would be for the intention of selling it with the premiums those bring. That wouldnt have survived the car ride home unopened if I bought it.
If youre unsure about it though wait until your positive you want to open it, you can always open it at a later date.

I went to a coin show recently and found a 1960 U.S. coin set still in the original plastic. It looked fantastic and the price was good.
I looked at it a dozen times and couldn't come to grips with the fact that I would have opened it, put them in 2x2, and then into my binder.
I decided to leave the show without that beautiful set so another collector could purchase it. I'm pretending that whoever purchases it won't open it. :)

Did you buy it for the coins inside or for the package. I love buying unopened sets so that I can be the one to be the first to open it

I'd have to check it for cameo coins, unless planning to flip it.
