I am feeling a little guilty because I have not had time to spend on this forum but I wanted to share a new purchase. Our budget has been "downgraded" since I first started my quest for an Oregon, however hubby kindly encouraged me to go ahead and get this one since I was a smittin' kittin'.

I have it at mid-AU and no, the rim ding does not bother me. It fits well with the rest of my hoard collection since it does exhibit some slight circulation and tons of character.

So, do you agree with mid-AU?

(and as usual, it looks better in hand than in my less than desired picture - ya, ya, its been several years, I should know better by now!)

Nice to hear from you here in the US Commemoratives forum!

Congrats on the purchase - I know you have been talking about getting an Oregon for quite some time. It's nice to see that you've found one you like!

From the images, I would suggest a grade in the XF range. I believe the wear plus the rim issues on each side prevent it from grading much higher.

I'm sure nickelsearcher will be able to provide a more in-depth review of your latest!

Congrats

I've always liked this design but haven't purchased one for my set...by the end of 2014 I will hope to have acquired one of these beautiful coins.

Thanks . You are probably right about the grade commems. I still really like it. Originally I had not planned on purchasing something raw but holding this without the plastic kind of gives me a buzz. I look forward to nickelsearcher's review.

I like it.

You know, there is always a place for it in GTP.

I know what you mean! I am not anti-slab: I think TPGs are almost essential with so much online "sight unseen" trade. But, if I'm not planning to resell a piece anytime soon, I don't mind cracking it out. And when I crack it out, I enjoy holding a real coin instead of a plastic box.

Congratulations CoinsKelly.

You are now holding in your hands an honest example of what my personal aesthetic considers to be the finest example of coinage art in the entire classic silver commemorative series.

The Fraser/Fraser team created for us an evocative image that to this day resonates through the Oregon Trail Half Dollar.

In case we forgot ... Laura designed the "Indian" and James designed the "Conestoga Wagon" ... there is still somewhat of a debate about which side is obverse versus reverse ... I give Laura the credit for the obverse with her tremendous Indian chief holding back the flood of settlers.

I recall as well your long and diligent search for an example that meets your collecting needs ... as such I am truly happy that you finally found your coin.

A technical evaluation of your Oregon Trail seems somewhat out of place ... the nature of your long standing search for an example that pleases you should be cause for celebration amongst us commemorative fans.

That said ... since you asked for it ... in my view your coin has a technical grade of XF45 (details) ...

The circulation wear evident on your coin is certainly below an AU grade based on my experience with worn examples of the series.

To the best of my judgment this coin ... lovely as it is ... would not certify at a TPG ... issues being the rim cuts and the gouge in the pack animal on James reverse ... hence the 'details' opinion.

Back to real world of satisfied collectors finally achieving a goal ... I am thrilled for you CoinsKelly that you are finally holding this coin in your hands.

Looking forward to anything else you might someday share in our small world of commemorative coins.

David

Yes I did! I value yours and commems comments. As a commemorative novice, I excitingly placed it a bit higher but XF does not bother me. I almost happy it turned out this way since it fit into our budget and it really looks great (to me) in hand. I think part of the reason I enjoy circulated coins so much is the thrill I get holding them. This baby will never get slobbed.

Nice coin Kelly! I like you can't always afford the pristine and perfect. That said, this is the kind of example I would also be very happy to have.

As said in an early Eric Clapton song......"Do What You Like" if you like the coin then that is all that counts. Personally myself I like slabbed commemoratives but I do have a few that I bought early on in my collecting and I must admit you do get a feeling of historical significance from an older coin that has been circulated. Ipso facto who has handled this coin and where has it been? That being said you have a nice coin and one of my favorites in the entire series of classical commemoratives.
