Until recently I was using a Canon point & shoot in the Close-up (little flower) mode for macro photography. While in standard shooting mode it was impossible to shoot small objects up close without using the Close-up mode on the camera.

I've just started using a Canon 40d and am trying to understand how to best use it for macro shooting. It too has a Close-up setting (little flower), but I really don't see much of a difference in the way it works from the standard automatic setting.

Am I missing something?

can you tell us which lens your using. When I first migrated to a DSLR I used the macro mode and couldn't see much difference to a point and shoot. The situation changed when I added in a dedicated macro lens and started using manual settings....initially the photos were worse than a point and shoot but as I learnt I improved.....I suspect you will find a similar learning curve(I'm still learning)

"Macro" mode (deliberately in quotes) on a 40D only invokes a preset group of imaging settings having zero to do with how good the image will be - that's about the lens alone - and reducing your effectiveness as a photographer because it removes setting choices from your control.

Do not use it.

Thanks Super Dave- you confirmed what I was observing.

I was playing with the camera tetherded in Av mode yesterday (my 18/55 w/ +8 close up) and was very pleased with the results. I still have a long way to go; the learning curve is a bit steep. I'll post when I have played with it a little more.

I'm really glad I stumbled across this board- it appears there are countless great mentors here!

We're a little....fanatical about photography here.

AV Mode is the choice rmpsrmps swears by; I prefer full Manual but if Ray likes it, it's worthy.
