Obviously I have some issues with lighting which I need to play with. Also apparently need help with using digital photo. Would like to get coin images to look exactly like coin in hand. Close but no cigar. Bob

Those strike me as pretty faithful; I see color I'd expect and a near-PL coin. These aren't nearly actual size, right? I see you're using CCF's Uploader system, which can make your images pretty small if you're not savvy with it.

Honestly, in your shoes I get a (free) account at Photobucket and post the images here from that. Here's a tutorial on the process:

Shoot for an posting image size of around 800-1000 pixels in actual coin diameter. That should be around a third of the actual size your camera is giving you.

Those images look pretty good for first attempts!

You will spend more time and effort getting lighting right than with any other activity. The 3 dimensions of coin lighting are:
1) clock position
2) height above coin
3) angle from horizontal

In addition to the above, the amount of diffusion in the light is another factor.

Play around with the above, independently, taking a shot each time you make a change, and make a note for each shot. Then look through them and see what you like, what you don't, and what direction you want to go. After about 100 shots, you should have it pretty close to what you want to see.

I suggest starting point as:

1:30 and 10:30
150mm
75-deg
tissue wrapped around light head

Thanks Ray & Dave. Dave I used photobucket to post the "2nd attempt" but was not aware of the better process you described; will use it in the future. Have had a photobucket account for years and still learned something new. I normally size to 800 pixels to post to VW and that seems to work well. Thanks guys for the continued support. I've got a few DMPL's I need to image. That should open up a new can of worms. Ray I will be experimenting with lighting. This digital stuff is a lot different than darkroom "dodging & burning". I will have to put this project on the back buener for a week or 2 as I will be working a lot of overtime for the next couple of weeks. Bob

DMPL's are going to drive you around the bend, man. They'll image nicely - they hotspot easier than lesser finishes, but the lighting rules will be the same - but don't plan on capturing the mirrors with any "standard" methodology. Just be prepared, and set your goals accordingly.
