Reserve Bank of Australia Annual Report â€" 2012
http://www.rba.gov.au/publications/...urrency.html

Serial Number Information

Not all denominations of Australian banknotes are produced every year.
Instead, they are printed based on demand for new banknotes to replace those no longer fit for circulation.
The information below details the serial number ranges for those banknotes printed each year.

With the old paper notes I don't think there is any way of working out annual print figures.
For a start NPAs annual report covers a "financial" year rather than a "calender" year.
Also the paper notes are not dated so you are relying on the signature combinations to calculate the year of issue. Even then there are instances of signatures being used for a while after the signatory left office.

I don't think NPA kept comprehensive records during the paper era but I think Mick Vort-Ronald has probably done the hard work (though I'm not sure as I haven't looked into it myself). To get that information you may need to buy one of his books though.
What information are you looking for exactly?

I think also you will find there is (or can be) a discrepancy between "printing dates" and "issue dates", far more so than one usually finds for coinage. That's because for coinage, the Manufacturer (the Mint) and the Issuer (the Treasury department) are two different entities, but for notes they are one and the same entity (the Reserve Bank). It's part of the Reserve Bank's job to keep a large stock of physical cash on hand, ready for an emergency. Freshly printed notes could sit around in the vaults for months or years before finally being issued to the public.

Yes indeed. Just the other day from an ATM, I withdrew some money and was issued with brand new $50 notes, in numerical sequence with the serial numbers beginning M 09.

Thanks guys , I was thinking there may be to many variables to pinpoint exact figures for a particular year(to answer your question MrT) as has now been pointed out to me,cheers. I would love to get an idea of the amount of paper decimal notes still in existence which is absolutely impossible , a bank I visited the other day had 30+ $100 notes to be destroyed , and I could not afford to save them :(

Sap sorry but I must disagree with you on the RBA being the sole producer and distributor of notes. The RBA does handle distribution but the production of notes is handled by Note Printing Australia who is the current contractor for Note production but there are other competitors as well to by the way.

OMF,
You said there are competitors for NPA. I did not know there were any competitors.
Have any Australian polymer notes been produced by any other company?

NPA have had a monopoly on note printing since the beginning in 1913.

Some may say their conduct in recent years is a little too cosy with their sole owner the RBA.

I would imagine that records of destruction of old paper money are kept by whoever officially destroys it but you'd probably need to look through a lot of reports to get a total.
