I'm noticing grading labels signifying (W) first releases on silver eagles without a mint mark. I understand uncirculated silver eagles do not bare a mint mark and was wondering how the grading services (NGC, etc) are annotating on the label yr (W) first release?

Are they able to do this due to the tube packaging they received from the collector and thus able to certify it came from "X" mint?

I appreciate the input and guidance.

Sincerely,
Gerik

Yes the only way to tell the difference is if the monster box of ASE's are shipped to the TPG sealed in the box with the mint label. Then the TPG will slab it according to the date, early release, if it left the mint within thirty days of the coin's initial release, and then a (W) or an (S) according to where it was minted. Once the strap on the box has been cut, the graders will no longer designate a mint for bullion coins.

The grading of this type from the mint just baffles me. All are manufactured with specifications to be like MS 70 or MS 69. Not meant for circulation. Why does this catch on as something one needs to do?
