Hello All, First of all, Thanks to all of those who view these forums. You have been extremely helpful to me, and have increased interest in general in the topic for the public. Second, sorry for the poor pics. Was in a hurry with customers waiting trying to get a pic of this coin. Customer wanted to sell, and I believe it is platinum bullion, but I could not confirm within the time allowed. What I could get from my customer was that it was a coin commemorating the 1993 anniversary of the Crown Prince Naruhito. I am not sure if 1993 was some special anniversary or if it was the wedding date. The coin weighs exactly 1 ozt. Density feels right. I was just hoping someone could confirm that this coin was 1 ozt of platinum. Searching the internet was rather fruitless. And my customer definitely spoke english as a second language so we had some barrier there. But I promised I would identify the coin. http://beachgoldassay.com/wp-conten...IMG_6098.jpghttp://beachgoldassay.com/wp-conten...IMG_6099.jpghttp://beachgoldassay.com/wp-conten...IMG_6100.jpgAny help is appreciated! Thank you, Charlie

Hi Charlie, did this token / bullion come with the paperwork?
It does look like it is an official product from Japan mint and does mention Pt at the bottom but platinum products from Japan mint are rather uncommon.
As this is a medal to commemeorate the Imperial family - this should be worth than the bullion value alone. In fact, I think this is the first time I have seen it.

I'm not sure, but my guess is that the Japan Mint did the assay certification for a private mint's medal to honor the Crown Prince's wedding. That looks like the Japan Mint's platinum hallmark from that time. I know the mint issued circulating, silver, and gold commemorative coins for the occasion, but my catalog of Japanese coins and bank notes doesn't show this medal.

Thank you for your responses! No, the bullion did not have paperwork, but it did come in a case that basically repeated some of the text that is on the coin referring to the crown prince.

I also don't see anything like this in any of the books I have here. In agreement with winterfell in that it possibly was minted privately yet stamped by the Japan mint. Very interesting medal though!

I have also submitted a question to the mint (we'll see right) to see if they can be of any assistance. Looking at the mint's data as you stated I can see the gold and silver medals. But there is absolutely nothing I can find relating the a platinum coin anywhere.. which of course peaks my curiosity more due to its potential rareness. http://www.mint.go.jp/eng/coin-eng/...e_index.html

enzeno, Japan mint has never issued a platinum coin although there are cases of platinum medal. Nevertheless, they are NOT common and I have only seen two different examples and this making it the third.

Thanks. I think I will do a specific gravity test on the coin for a final test. Can anyone translate exactly what is on the coin by chance (what you can read of my pictures anyway)? Thanks again for everyone's help. Charlie

It's somewhere along the lines of commemorating the marriage of the Crown Prince, Heisei 5. Color wise, it looks more like platinum instead of silver. Looks good to me.
