1981-D Nickel with 2 areas of what looks like copper exposed right above Jefferson's head and next to the rim. It looks like plating has peeled off but there's no plating to peel off, correct? It doesn't look like post mint damage. If this is an error, what is it called?

This is my first post, thanks for you help.

It may be corrosion? You are correct, there is no cladding or plating on the U.S. Nickels. Nickels are 75% copper and 25% Nickel, but they are melted together. Often nickels found outdoors may have copper color, but under the red color you can see the silver showing through when the coin is circulated.
Rest in Peace
