A scorcher here in the Chicago area today, a good time to be indoors at a coin show. I got there at the tail end, but still turned up a few silver type coins - a 1911 Newfie half, a 1939 Canadian dollar (ever since visiting Ottawa I've wanted one of these for the Parliament building on the reverse - I paid $17 for it, in AU - fair price or not, I like it)and another Finnish 2 Markkaa. Not a bad afternoon's entertainment.

A Canadian 1939 trends for $16.00 in AU-50, so it seems you where right in the ball park. This was issued to commemorate the Royal Visit of that year.

Note that show is supposed to open at 9AM. I got there about 8:30AM and it was crowded already. About 80% of the dealers already set up. I found my usual dealers there and after checking the place out for about an hour, left with a handfull of decent coins. One was a 42/41 Mercury dime in about MS64. Fullest bands I've seen on a Merc for a long time. Several Buffalo nickels and a few Lincolns and the money ran out. I like that show. Lots of dealers have lots of chairs and at my age I like that even more than the coins. Free admittance, free parking, over priced food and coffee, clean washrooms so at my age what else do you need. Don't forget the Itasca coin show next Sunday. See you there.

I sometimes feel like a parrot. I've repeated this about coin shows in the Chicago area so many times I feel like they should be giving me a bonus for advertising. All you have to do is go to Google and type in Illinois Coin Shows. There are a minimum of 3 a Month within 15 miles of my house. Of course that would mean you would have to go to my house and then the coin show to make it in less than 15 miles. You buy breakfast.
The Lamont show is the bottom of my list of places to go. Most difficult to find and usually the smallest of the standard 3 shows.
Countryside is the biggest of the normal 3 shows. At times 80 to 100 dealers. Occationally Sat and Sun. I never can figure out when.
Itasca is easy to find, smaller than countryside, best coin deals though.
All are free entrance, free parking and naturally you pay for coffee. Food is best at Itasca but cost the most. Coutryside always has many booklets, pamphlets, newsleters on coins at a front table and all free. Occationally some candy. Last show there was Coin Prices, Numismatic News, Coin World and several more and all free. Those go fast. All there when I got there and most gone when I left.
Basically most coin dealers are the same at all three shows. If you get to know them, you get better deals naturally. A few will even go looking for coins for you. Example is Rober Griffitys who is looking for a 20D MS grade Lincoln Cent for me.
Usually at all three shows there are dealers that sell Jewlery, currency and occationally knives.
Of course there are those dumb coin shows at the Rosemont Convention Center. Overpriced coins, pay to park, pay to get in, pay way to much for food. Also, a few at that Hotel accross the street from the Rosemont Convention Center and those also, stink.
Like I said the Itasca show is the best for me as far as prices are concerned so I'll be there this Sunday for sure.

Here's that 1939 Canadian Parliament building. And no, I will not upload the obverse of George VI!

The Canadian silver dollars are great.

I have the Parliament building, the ship, the totem pole, and the 1967 goose. Also, two 1935 Dollars.

Hope to finish the set someday.
