...well, not completely. However, for argument sake, we'll just say I am. I am 27 and reside in Florida. I have been collecting coins and us/foreign currency since joining the Army back in 1996 (ETS in 2000). I do not have any real knowledge of the items I have nor their values. Just like to collect these items from my various travels.

However, we are cleaning out the house of my sick grandmother (cancer) and came across a "coin collection". Not very extensive and at first glance would not appear to be anything to special. However, I am not 100%. Since some of the coins have been noted to have been property of my great, great, great grandfather...I have decided to do some research.

I have no intentions of selling anything of value, but add them to my collection. I am the last in my blood line (no brothers or sisters) and would love to one day have a family (son) to pass these along to in the future.

What I have so far are a good number of 1/2 dollars (JFK?). I have a stack of Quaters from 1946, 1962, 1964 (maybe some other different years). Have about 12 Morgan and 1 Peace dollar coins. As old as 1879, 1888, 1921, 1922. A couple of Susan B's. Uncirculated morgan (1887), Liberty (1923), and Liberty (1986). A "silver coin collection" consisting of a nickel through the eisenhower silver dollar. Lastly, I have some various silver bullion in coin shape from different events, ie...liberty, US Olympics, etc....

Well, I think I have made this long enough. Sorry in advance. Look forward to being around for a while.

Welcome Jayson, What you have received may be far more than just a few old coins. Your grandparents may have left you much much more but you just don't know it yet! Give it some time, get involved with the gift and then, in a year or two, you will see what I mean. Welcome to the forum and if its all the same to you please keep the hurricanes and tropical storms down there? Hope everyone fared well in the last few days!

Well, what is very "neat" about the entire situation is that I NEVER new that my grandfather, let alone my great grandfather/mother were collectors. It has never been brought up, not a word. So to find this antique box with its' antique rubber band around it containing old perscription packets (my great grandfather was a MD)with coins. Each stating when it had been given (written in pencil by my great grandmother). I have a 1804 quater in one of these envelopes that states that it was given to my great grandfather by his dad on his 1 year birthday. Really neat stuff. BTW, a little update. Also found an 1872 indian head. I know I have heard people mention these before.

I wanted to say...
"That 1804 quarter would be worth more to you than to any other person in the world".

Then I looked up how much it was worth !!!!! WOW.

Still if I were you I'd never sell it. It's A genuine Family Heirloom.
Your are 100% right, it is "Really neat stuff"!

Selling isn't an option. These will remain in the family. I believe we counted it up and the chain of coins (as far as I know) started with my Great Great Great Grandfather,Great Great Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Grandfather, Dad, than I. I am the only child and oldest grandchild of 2. So I have to have a son to both carry on the family name and to take these coins off my hands years down the road.

Welcome
Jayson
You will find there are a number of collectors here in Florida also a number of "good" dealers and clubs.

To get the real value not just "special family value"
you can post pictures on the site and have us attempt to help you or you might want to look up some of the clubs and dealers in your area for assistance.

You will also find posted on other posts a list of reference materials that will be a great help to you.
Good luck with your new treasures.

Thank you for the welcome. How might I go about locating local clubs/dealers? Google? I will go out and purchase a digital camera to post up my coins. As well as purchase some reading/research material.

Thanks again,

I am in south Florida and do not know all the resources in your area but if you will go to the member list of this forum under the letter "T"
You will find tradernick. He has a coin shop near Orlando and can guide you in the right direction. I have had very positive experiences with Nick.

I will let others post which reference books will be best for you as I concentrate on foreign coins (Australia) and I would not be able to give you the most complete list.

Come on gang help this fella out.

Thanks yet again. I am sure other will chime in, lol, the thread isn't but a couple of hours old. Where abouts in S. Fl? Part of my family lives in Jupiter and Coral Gables. Orlando isn't but a 45min-1hr drive east of me. No big deal at all. On another car/motorcylce related site I post/moderate on, a guy posted two books to purchase. I will copy and paste those later and compare them to what others are suggesting.

Jayson your story is really a great start to a fantastic hobby. Your family has provided you with the foundation and it is up to you to build on that! It is a great feeling to hold something that your family before you felt was worth keeping and safe guarding to be passed down through the generations. Now you are the keeper, and regardless of the value, only you can carry this project on through the years. Good luck to you as you prepare YOUR part of the family history to pass on some day. Hope you learn to enjoy what so many of us have found.
I gave my grandfather an uncirculated set of Bicentennial coins, when they came out in 1975, hoping to get him interested in coin collecting. It didn't work but he did treasure the gift and was very proud of them and the Capital holder I put them in. Not much involved and they are not anything special but upon his death they came back to me. I look at them almost daily now and a million dollars couldn't buy them from me. He only held them for 10 years and now I have held them for another 20! I would have never thought these coins would be around in the family for 30 years and would become a family heirloom but here they are and here they stay!

If you want to put out the funds, Kraus is good and so is breens, for Id and rarity, also some good info on varieties, Price guides are just that guides, a place to start, but real world values often differ from those, both up and down ,, Best price guides are finished auctions, heritage, and even ebay.

Welcome Jayson. I think it is absolutely great that you are hanging on to your heritage. To me, there isn't a better coin collection than one that you received from someone and built upon it.

Thank you all very much.

Upon further looking, it would appear that I have some VERY small canadian coins as well. The paper envelope (as described above) says something to the effect of "new Zari(?) mark coin" There is probally close to 12 very small coins. Some gold in color, some barely legible. I really need to get that camera.
